Behind that simple action, however, several systems work together to find the correct server and deliver the page. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.icann.org\/resources\/pages\/dns-2022-09-13-en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Domain Name System (DNS)<\/a> is the directory that makes this possible.<\/p>\n<h2>Why websites need DNS<\/h2>\n<p>Computers communicate using IP addresses, such as <code>192.0.2.10<\/code> or longer IPv6 addresses. These are useful for machines but inconvenient for people to remember. DNS connects a readable domain name, such as <code>example.co.uk<\/code>, to the IP address of the server hosting its website.<\/p>\n<p>A domain registration gives you the right to use a name, while web hosting provides the server space where your website files and applications live. DNS sits between them and directs visitors to the right destination. The three services are closely connected, but each performs a different job.<\/p>\n<h2>What happens during a DNS lookup?<\/h2>\n<p>When you enter a domain, your browser first checks whether it already knows the answer. It may have recently visited the site and stored the result. The browser can then connect to the web server and request the page.<\/p>\n<h2>Nameservers and DNS records<\/h2>\n<p>Authoritative nameservers hold the official DNS configuration for a domain. This configuration is made up of records with different purposes. An A record directs a name to an IPv4 address, while an AAAA record does the same for IPv6. CNAME records create aliases, MX records direct email, and TXT records are often used for verification and email-security policies.<\/p>\n<p>A mistake in these records can make a healthy web server appear unavailable. For example, changing hosting provider without updating the A or AAAA record may continue sending visitors to the old server.<\/p>\n<h2>Why changes are not always immediate<\/h2>\n<p>DNS answers are cached to reduce repeated queries and make browsing more efficient.
